Asbestos/Lead/Silica Awareness

 

1.0 PURPOSE

To provide relevant and appropriate training to individuals those that enter and work in spaces where asbestos, lead and silica exposure exist and ensuring that the syllabus and instruction materials are in strict accordance with WORKSAFEBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Part 6.

2.0 INFORMATION

The training course is based on WORKSAFEBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Part 6 for safe working requirements when entering the spaces containing asbestos, lead and silica dust. The training provided by Metro Safety Training Inc. consists of two parts. The first part is based on the theoretical instruction from our in-depth training modules. These consist of slide shows, videos, lecture materials, and questionnaires. The second part is the practical portion. This part consists of being fit tested for respiratory protective equipment, handling hand and power equipment, identifying hazardous elements.

All students will have ample opportunity to work with the instructor so that they can be fully evaluated and certified. Our goal is to certify safe, skilled workers and students.

3.0 COURSE CONTENT

 3.1 PART 1: THEORETICAL (80%)

The first part of the course uses specifically designed training modules that are located in the course manual, and provided digitally to each student. The course is based on WORKSAFEBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations Part 6. This training consists of 10 modules, which include:

  1. Federal, Provincial and Site specific Rules, Regulations and Policies
  2. Types of asbestos
  3. Friable and non-friable asbestos
  4. PCB (Polychlorinated biphenyl)
  5. Silica dust exposure and exposure control plan
  6. Fit test
  7. Administrative and Engineered Controls
  8. Personal Protective Equipment
  9. Abatement and removal techniques
  10. Disposal techniques

At the end of the theoretical portion of the course (10 modules in total) there will be a test given based on the information presented in the course material. The test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. The pass mark is 80%.

 3.2 PART 2: PRACTICAL (20%)

This part consists of a hands-on familiarization with the equipment, the completion of inspecting, using and practising in or around the space mock up station. The pass mark is 80%. 

 4.0 CERTIFICATION

All successful graduates of our Asbestos/Lead/Silica program will receive wallet size certification cards.

5.0 RECORDS

The written and practical test records will be placed on the worker’s personal file and training is recorded in the training database.
