What You Will Learn
The Intermediate First Aid curriculum goes beyond basic life support, providing students with the skills to manage complex medical emergencies and trauma. Participants will gain hands-on experience in:
- Advanced Assessment: Applying the Priority Action Approach (PAA) and conducting secondary surveys.
- Trauma Management: Treating chest injuries (flail chest, pneumothorax), internal bleeding, and applying tourniquets.
- Cardiac Care: Two-person CPR and AED operation.
- Environmental & Medical: Managing hypothermia, heatstroke, diabetic emergencies, seizures, and stroke.
- Patient Care: Spinal management, immobilization of major fractures, and burn assessment using the rule of nines.
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for individuals designated as first aid attendants in workplaces with 20+ workers or those in high-hazard industries. It is also ideal for those working in remote areas where BCEHS ambulance access may be delayed. Upon successful completion, students receive a WorkSafeBC Intermediate First Aid certificate valid for 3 years.
