Summer is probably the most favourite season for children. It’s that time of the year when they can finally go out to play with friends and enjoy the breeze and greens. They jump, run, skip, climb, and pedal to make the most of their free time. However, summer fun can also put your kids at risk of suffering falling, slipping, tripping, and hurting.

But you can’t stop your little one from going outdoors because of the risk of summer injuries. A better way is to adopt preventative measures to keep your children safe while enjoying the sunny days and refreshing evenings.

Safety Precautions for Skateboarding, Scooting, and Rollerblading

To keep your children from getting hurt while using rollerblades and skateboards, note the following things:

  • If your child is five years old or younger, don’t let them use the skateboard or rollerblades.
  • Take your children to playgrounds that are designated for scooting, rollerblading, and skateboarding. Please don’t allow them to do it on the passenger pathways, streets, or even your yard. Yards usually have uneven surfaces that increase the risk of tripping and injuries.
  • Make your children wear Proper Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing these activities. The one thing you cannot miss out on is a helmet approved by the Snell Memorial Foundation (SMF0, Canadian Standards Association (CSA), or American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Wearing knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist bands are equally important.
  • Make your children wear bright colours before they head out for rollerblading, scooting, or skateboarding. Brighter clothing will make them more visible to passersby and decrease their risk of getting involved in an accident.

Safety Precautions for Bicycling

  • Make sure your kids are following these measures while riding a bicycle:
  • Teach them to walk their bicycles for crossing a road and at a pedestrian crosswalk or an intersection.
  • Before they cross the road, they should make sure that the traffic lights are red.
  • They should always ride on a straight path while going down on a declining street. Teach your children never to get too close to the parking areas or driveways, which increases their risk of collision.
  • They should make sure no traffic is incoming and indicate several times before taking a turn.
  • They should wear bright clothing even when bicycling in the sunny daylight.
