CPR, an acronym for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a first aid emergency procedure done on victims if they go into cardiac arrest. The procedure ensures that the heart keeps pumping blood to the brain and the rest of the body. It has been proven that CPR can increase the chances of survival and ever since it was discovered in 1700s, it has saved countless lives. Before starting CPR, remember to call an emergency helpline as soon as you can. There are two main ways CPR can be performed.

Chest Compression Method

The chest compression method is the most common form of a CPR procedure. Here is a step by step guide to perform CPR using the hands-only approach.

  • Kneel next to the victim’s side and safely position yourself.
  • Locate the middle of the chest where the ribs join.
  • Stack your hands on top of each other.
  • Make sure your shoulders and elbows are straight and right above the victim.
  • Push down using the heels of your hand, approximately 5 cm deep.
  • Let the chest expand after each compression.
  • Continue giving compressions between regular intervals of half a second.

A CPR procedure can last for 5 minutes or more. Continue performing until medical assistance arrives at the scene.

Artificial Ventilation Method

Performing CPR through artificial ventilation involves adding air into the victim’s lung when the victim has stopped breathing. They are to be performed after chest compressions since oxygen is still present in the lungs for a minute or two after cardiac arrest. Here is a step-by-step procedure on how to perform CPR using an artificial ventilation approach.

  • Place your hand on the victim’s forehead and tilt the head upwards to ensure that the airways are open.
  • Pinch the victim’s nostrils.
  • Breathe into the victim’s mouth; this can be done either directly mouth to mouth or using a CPR mask

We Provide Professional CPR Training

The hands-only approach is best suited for the general public when they see a victim collapse and notices a dying heartbeat. For the trained, a combination of both methods in tandem will increase the chances of survival. If you wish to learn how to perform CPR practically, we provide Canadian Red Cross First Aid and CPR Trainings. Metro Safety is a training school that gives health safety programs in BC.
