Choosing a First Aid course is not as easy as it seems. There are tons of questions and doubts that often hold you back from registering. At Metro Safety Training, we want to ensure that our first aiders are not only equipped with skills but also packed with the necessary knowledge.

Read on for answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

  1. What is the minimum age required for enrolling in a first aid course?

The minimum age requirement for our Level 1 First Aid training course is 16 years. The individual should be physically capable of performing basic First Aid techniques that involve minor kneeling, lifting, and crouching.

  1. What should I have in my first aid kit?

A detailed list is usually provided on the first day on training, however, here are a few basic things to start with:

  • Emergency telephone numbers, doctors, family, neighbors, etc.
  • A pair of stainless-steel bandage scissors

  • Instant cold packs/ice gel pouches, to reduce swelling
  • Thermometer

  • Antiseptic wipes

  • Disposable (surgical) gloves

  • Surgical mask (esp. during COVID-19)

  • Flashlight

  • Sterile gauze pads

  • Safety pins

  • Eyewash and eye bath

  • Painkillers (paracetamol)

  • Metro Safety Training’s First Aid manual.

  1. Where should I store my first aid kit?

We recommend storing your First Aid kit at a central and easily accessible location. Ensure this is a cool and dry place, away from the reach of children. Keeping a First Aid kit in your car is ideal, so you’re always prepared for emergencies on the road.

  1. What type of certificate will I receive upon the completion of my course?

After completing each course, first aiders receive a certification. This may vary based on the level of the course. For e.g., successful graduates of OFA level 1 will receive an OFA Level 1 certificate; successful candidates of Emergency First Aid with CPR/AED Level C will immediately receive a Red Cross certification card. The certification level is mentioned below for each course on our website.

  1. How long is my first aid certificate valid for?

The First Aid course certification is valid for a standard period of 3 years. After this, you’ll be required to renew your certification.

  1. What if I don’t have my first aid kit at the scene of an accident?

This is a widespread occurrence for many of our first aiders. Therefore, we recommend keeping a separate First Aid kit in your car, and a smaller carry-along version for your purse. This will always keep you equipped.

  1. How do I know which course is suitable for me?

If you require a certification for your school or work, they’ll provide you with the specific course title. Regarding workplace regulation requirements, contacting your provincial government body that oversees workplace health and safety, is ideal. If you’re still unsure, our Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C is the most common and the most comprehensive course that Red Cross offers.
